What is an adjective ?

An adjective is a word that gives information about noun and pronoun.

Adjectives are words used to clarify or add meanings in noun and pronoun.

Physics is the branch of science.

Here, branch and science are adjectives, gives information about noun Physics.

Switzerland is the beautiful country.

beautiful and country are adjectives

I hope you understand. In the next sentence you identify adjectives

The food was hot and tasty.

NOTE: Adjectives comes before noun and after nouns.

Two Types of Adjectives:-

Determiners    and    descriptive
(Less interesting)               (more interesting)

- his, her, my, yours             - beautiful, big
- this, that, these                   - small, tall, short
- what, whose, which           - blue
- articles  - a/an/the              - yellow

Determiners are a small group of grammar words that acts as adjectives.

That's my car.

Comparatives and Superlatives:


Comparatives and superlatives are words used to compare two nouns and pronouns.

In comparatives we use er and in superlatives use est form.

He is taller than Ali.



Comparatives:

The corvette is more expensive than the BMW.

The BMW is less expensive than the corvette.

Superlatives:

The corvette is the most expensive of the two cars.

The BMW is the least expensive of the two cars.

In some adjectives we don't use more and most, we use er and est at the endings.

Adjectives     Comparatives      Superlatives

black                     blacker                blackest
bold                       bolder                  boldest
deep                      deeper                  deepest
wise                       wiser                    wisest
fat                           fater                     fattest

Some adjectives are irregular you cannot guess that they are comparatives or superlatives.

For example
good                      better                    best
bad                        worse                   worst

Below sentences have errors, correct them!

If there is est or er form don't use more or most.

Order of adjectives:-


If there are more than one adjectives, there is a fix order, where to put first and second . . . .

Tablecloth- Italian, yellow, small, new, cotton, round, beautiful.

Your job is to arrange these adjectives in the blanks.

  1. determiner - my, yours
  2. Opinion - beautiful, expensive, delicious
  3. Size - small, medium, large
  4. Shape - round, square, rectangle
  5. age - old, new, young
  6. Colour - blue, red, green
  7. Origin - French, Italian, Turkish
  8. material - cotton, wood, plastic

Correct order below:

A beautiful small round new yellow Italian cotton tablecloth.

Note: There are not used so many adjectives in one sentence, it just a example to understand.

ed  and ing adjectives:


The ing adjectives show cause or reason
and ed adjectives shows effect or result.


1. My wife and I went to see a movie. The movie was boring, so we were bored.

2. The students felt really confused because the professor lecture was so confusing!

In the first sentence movie was the reason of boring and the result was bored.

In the second sentence confusing was the cause and confused was the effect.
